I am not a movie reviewer, nor have i seen the movie “SURFS UP”, though I just received an email from a friend ( thanx LATAI) just singing the praises of (“SURFS UP!) Which has increased my resolve to not only see it, but to take our three kiddies along for the ride as well 🙂
I have been meaning to see this “Sony pictures animated effort” and was captivated by the little i have seen of it – over these many months, a teaser trailer, some still shots of the animation and of course the mandatory use of toys in advertising- take-a-way kids meals and the like, all the prerequisite accessories to a successful kids movie. ( But we don’t have to succumb to those things do we?)
Just like a good joke – timing is everything and although this penguin movie is one in a series of penguin orientated movies that has vistied the silver screen, the possibility for this little movie to be overlooked in the shadow of “Happy Feet” is not likely.
Upon seeing shorts of this film i was reminded of scenes from “The Incredibles” , like the time Dash was being pursued on that thunderbird looking island, crazy palms, rocky clefs, well lit and shadow filled filled CGI to make your monitor resolution salivate for wider screen access!
The Incredibles remains one of my favourite PIXAR/DISNEY movies of all time, whilst their new movie “Ratatouille” displas the same cutting edge and mind blowing animation, it does not seem to attract the same interest of its predecessors, whether characters , story line or other, the reasons for this i am not sure!
“Surf’s Up” To me seems to be the stand out animated flick of the year and whilst i haven’t seen it as yet, my anticipation to see it hasn’t been such for a long time!
Seeing a burley Penguin by the name of “TANK” adorned in marquesan style tattoos is a cool thing, so Polynesian influence and homage is slight it would seem, though being set in the islands, i am sure there would be more to speak of once i have seen it?
As we get older we think of our selves as movie critics and animation connoisseurs, with this one i just want to kick back and not become too analytical, to be on the same level as my kids, to just enjoy it and hopefully have a new found favourite, animated classic!
If you have seen it leave us a something out of 10 review, your humble opinion is invited!
As i type this my three kids have repeatedly pulled at my shirt sleeve and said “hey dad – can we go and see surfs up – tonight?”
Perhaps tonights the night>????
YES – We all went and saw it – all I will say is that we enjoyed it immensely, animation was excellent – off the hook!
Kids enjoyed it – and now my eight year old boy wants to hit the water again – makes Dad proud aye! – hahaha!
There were some great characters and whilst the story line was in some ways predictable, it wasn’t for my kid’s and that shows me that perhaps the older we get, the harder to reach and the more cynical and harder to impress we become – though i firmly believe that happiness comes from simple small things in life – so go watch, be content …. try to be a kid again!
You just might enjoy yourself?
I often do!~ 😉
